Transparent coatings as hardcoats are already in use to protect polycarbonate cover lens from scratches and UV-light. A long-term stable combination of such an hardcoat with Easy to Clean properties would offer new possibilities for tailoring the powerwash facilities of the headlamps. Furthermore conventional coatings can be an alternative to meet the customers' expectations. In the paper the experience of Genthe-X-Coatings (GTX) in the field of coatings and applications with the customers' demands is presented. The company is currently involved in several projects dealing with driver assistance systems like reversing sensors, tracking sensors, and distance sensors and has proven the technical and commercial feasibility of nanotechnology in combination with sol-gel chemistry by approved series production methods like spray coating in an automotive environment. The coatings on glass, PMMA, and polycarbonate are state-of-the-art. System upgrades are foreseen in close co-operation with the customers following their technical demands. In detail on glass this has to focus on further improvements of the heat resistance of the coatings (e.g. smaller and hotter foglamps). Furthermore these systems have to be adapted to other substrates like COC or SAN. The transition of the antifog materials to further products with customer-tailored functions and other markets and the introduction of applications is ongoing. Reversing sensors, tracking sensors, and distance sensors are in field tests in 2005 with tailored functional transparent coatings. New non-automotive products are already manufactured using the new production concept for antifog coatings and hardcoats explained above.
