Near infrared (NIR) light sources for illumination tasks in automotive applications have become a field of high interest in the automotive industry. Various systems are currently being developed, which will necessarily use some kind of IR light source to illuminate a scene which is observed by a suitable camera (CMOS, CCD) These are night vision systems, seat occupancy detection systems, pre crash sensors, pedestrian protection systems, side vision systems and many more. This paper introduces the latest developments of high power NIR semiconductor light sources at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. There are two main classes of emitters: high power lasers and thin film IREDs. For applications, where high average powers of more than 2 W or/and peak powers of up to 100 W are needed, lasers offer a very efficient solution. If temperature robustness is important and the power needed is in the range of 100 mW to 5 W, thin film IRED emitters offer a very flexible way of designing a custom-tailored solution. Both sources can be used in cw or pulse mode. Due to superior efficiency of semiconductor light sources and its pulse-mode capability, the power consumption can be optimized and the thermal management is eased. High power lasers as well as LED based high power emitters are discussed. A specially designed chip and package technology for optimized performance of the IR light source with emphasis on the use in the above mentioned applications is presented.
