Vehicle sound quality and its refinement is an issue of increasing importance to vehicle manufacturers. Components of the drive train make a significant contribution to the total vehicle noise, where the primary source of excitation is the constant mesh gears used within the transmission. A specific type of transmission orientated noise is gear whine which is a result of Transmission Error (TE). This acts as the source of excitation for the shaft and bearing system, which in turn excite the transmission casing causing it to radiate noise. This noise is heard in the passenger compartment as an audible whine. In this paper the continued development and validation of an analytical tool is described used for the prediction of TE for external spur and helical gear systems. 3-D gear analysis theory is outlined discussing: the compliance matrix, contact point calculations, compliance matrix along the contact line and force on the contact line. The analytical tool developed is described. It combines system dynamics with the highly non-linear nature of gear contact. The results compare very well with the test results at mid-to-high torque values and show that the software is able to identify the key features associated TE.
