DSM's Stanyl is a high heat thermoplastic polyamide resin and an excellent material for gears in demanding applications with respect to torques to be transmitted and operating temperatures. Stanyl, a polyamide 46, has a crystallinity of 70 % which results in very good wear and friction properties and an excellent retention of mechanical properties such as strength and stiffness at elevated temperatures. The material allows for very fast cycle time with water-cooled moulds. The higher retention of mechanical properties at elevated temperatures above 100 deg C allows smaller gears to be designed compared to PA 66 or PPA while still transmitting the same torque. In the paper the annealing of Stanyl for further improvement of high T properties while at the same time reducing the materials moisture uptake is outlined. Annealing is a high temperature treatment of the material. The result is a further 50 % increase in stiffness and strength at temperatures above the glass transition temperature. Another benefit is that the water uptake of Stanyl can be reduced to the level found with PPA. The annealing effect is irreversible and is accompanied by an increase in the material's molecular weight. DSM has extensively modelled the annealing of Stanyl. Gear measurements are currently running at the university of Berlin and in Geleen to provide additional supporting data. Several Stanyl gear applications have been commercialized: ETC gears for Hitachi and Denso, EPS gears for Honda and starter motor gears.
