The demands for distributed control on agricultural equipment challenge electronics. The requirement of very high uptime and the need for years of parts service encourages equipment developers to define a common platform, which must provide an electronics infrastructure that maximizes cooperation between distributed processing modules around the machine and a development environment where software and hardware can be modularized and re-used. The more these modules are re-used the higher the reliability of the machine and the less it is affected by electronic component obsolescence. The most demanding is the need to customize the machine for many different uses and users. All of these demands can be met with a software payload system, such as the John Deere Custom Performance and embedded software information technology (ESIT). The John Deere Custom Performance system defines a design methodology for creating and delivering software modules for a distributed set of controllers. At the time of ordering of the machine, software payloads can be configured specifically for the features desired and loaded into the distributed controllers on the machine. These payloads can also be created as service centres and downloaded using the advantages of the World Wide Web. The methodology leads to the creation of an infrastructure that consists of rules, drivers and interface libraries, pass codes, and desktop software tools.
