To better understand the contribution of motor vehicle emissions to ambient particulate matter (PM) levels, there is a need to quantify in-use motor vehicle PM emission factors. A survey of recent emission factor studies reveals a very large range of reported emission rates for both heavy duty diesel (HDD) vehicles and light duty gasoline (LDG) vehicles. The large differences can be attributed partly to advances in engine and emission control technology and changes in fuel, as well as the different engine operating conditions under which the studies were performed. Additional measurements of emission factors from in-use fleets are needed to ensure that mobile emission models accurately simulate real world emissions. In this paper we describe the strengths and weaknesses of current methods used to measure emission factors from motor vehicles, summarize observed emission factors, and outline data needs to provide for an adequate assessment of PM emissions from mobile sources.
