Two brand-new small-medium ranges of 4-cylinder gasoline engines have been developed jointly by Nissan and Renault focusing on substantial improvement of the basic performance as the steadfast basis for future innovation. All components and systems were redesigned or newly developed. The engines cover a 1.5 l to 1.6 l version (HR engine) and a 1.8 l to 2.0 l version (MR engine). Mechanical friction and thermal efficiency were the focus for substantial improvement of the basic performance. The authors describe mechanical friction (bore circularity machining, super micro finishing on crankshaft / camshaft bearings), thermal efficiency (cooling efficiency around combustion chamber, combustion velocity, residual gas). In addition to the improvements on basic thermal efficiency, pumping loss on partial throttle condition is reduced by adopting heavy EGR system, for the purpose of a broader operating condition and a further reduced pumping loss. An improvement of quietness was achieved by the optimization of parts form by analyzing actual run, a balancer system and an intake sound that changes linearly to the driver's pedal control. Compactness is significantly improved and optimized.
