Although weight reduction in aircrafts is a fundamental matter use of Magnesium alloys is not widespread in the interior of airplanes due to 'traditional' problems with corrosion resistance. In spite of the creation of new Magnesium alloys with improved corrosion resistance, these alloys are mostly designed for automotive industry. Within the 6th Framework Programme the EU supports an R&D project named IDEA, in which Magnesium casting alloys are developed for use in aviation industry. The paper addresses the properties of the new alloys as well as examples of typical applications in aeronautics. Some of the goals for tooling optimisations for magnesium casting in aeronautics applications are presented in the paper. With the manufactured tools first test castings and test specimens, have already been cast and are going to be analysed (mechanical properties, microstructure etc.). To assure dimensional accuracy of the test specimens and reliability of the tests, the complete measurement of the tools was performed with the high-end digitalisation and measuring equipment. The Design Manual provided by the project will encourage aviation designers to use Mg-components for aircrafts and guide them safely when choosing Mg components. The manual will contain comprehensive information on the raw material, phase selection through appropriate production technologies, processes definition and up to a finished product and the complete assembly including recommendations for product marking, long range corrosion prevention and dissimilar metals. The manual shall also assure that the findings of this project, the design and construction rules, will regularly be applied to components produced after the end of this project and thus be a contribution to sustainable improvement of aircraft components with respect to product performance, environmental load and economic manufacture.
