Normally high-quality steel showing particular properties is required for the production of racks used in steering systems. In addition to a high degree of purity and specific mechanical-technological properties the modern electromechanical steering systems with their integrated racks require exceptionally well stress relieved steel bars. Based on optimized raw material supply by voestalpine Stahl Donawitz, the companies Stahl Judenburg and Umformtechnik Bäuerle have therefore developed a process technology for the production of such steel bars. This production method puts particular emphasis on the heat treatment process. A high stress relieved condition is achieved through induction quenching and tempering as well as subsequent single bar's induction stress relieving. The new stress relieved steel bars were successfully applied in the new electromechanical steering system of the new Golf V.
