China's natural gas industry has been developing rapidly since the late 1990s, but the pace of development has been particularly fast in recent years as overall energy supply in China has tightened. Construction of natural gas pipelines has been a high priority in China, spurred by high demand for electric power and energy in general. And within the past year, more LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal projects for imports have been approved by the government. This article updates China's major natural gas pipeline projects and the progress of various LNG import terminals. Also discussed are major challenges facing the country as a result of a significantly higher share of natural gas in China's total primary energy consumption.
