One of the important environmental stresses which can spoil the appearance of today's high gloss automotive coatings are attacks by acid atmospheric precipitation. Therefore, sufficient acid etch resistance is demanded, and which has been tested until now by outdoor exposure in Jacksonville, FL performed over 14 weeks during the summer month basing on special test specifications of the car manufacturers. The degree of acid etching is strongly influenced by the climatic conditions on the coating surfaces like TOW and temperature during the outdoor exposures in Jacksonville as well as during outdoor tests in South Florida using controlled acid stress by artificial acid rain (called as 'Southern Florida Acid Rain Test'). The repeatability of the 'Southern Florida Acid Rain Test' proved to be not much better than that of the outdoor weathering test in Jacksonville. Sufficient repeatability seems only be achievable in a test if beside the acid stress the climatic conditions are also applied in repeatable controlled manner. A subtropical or tropical region having the requested repeatability of their essential climatic conditions from year to year is not available. Therefore, a real or modified outdoor weathering test can not fulfil these necessary climatic precautions. The 'Southern Florida Acid Rain Test' can only be used for replacing the Jacksonville outdoor weathering if performed with at least 2 repetitions but having the essential advantage in the possibility to use the same weathering test site for all kinds of Florida tests. As experienced in Jacksonville only the summer season can be used for the 'Southern Florida Acid Rain Test'. Performing the test in other seasons can result in no realizable or measurable surface defects. Controlled acid stress together with controlled climatic conditions on the coating surface can only be exactly realized in an appropriate laboratory weathering device. Special artificial weathering tests for predicting of the acid etch resistance like the 'ADF test' according to the German test guide VDI 3958 /12 or to the 'BASF Accelerated Acid Test' published in which proved both to be a convenient approaches to Jacksonville in general are known. They did not got serious rivalry by the 'Southern Florida Acid Rain Test' in testing of automotive coatings because of performing in the own laboratory at every time consuming far fewer time.
