A handy oil skimmer has been developed, based on past experiences with oil spill incidents, for the protection of the sea from oil pollution, using a test model. A water jet pump was selected as the pumping method due to its simplicity and light weight. A vacuum was induced around a high velocity of water, with high pressure water supplied through the pipe for driving water, and was injected into the pipe at a high speed for recovered oil or water. In a performance test, a model of a handy oil skimmer, with a total length of around 3.4 meters, was used. Oil recovering experiments were carried out on a wavy water surface in a test tank using a high-viscous emulsified oil made of bunker-C oil and water. Performance tests were carried out within an average oil separation efficiency of 97.2 percent for emulsified oil and 85.5 percent for bunker-C oil. The separation efficiency was measured by calculating the percentage of oil fraction before separation and oil fraction after separation. The investigating team is convinced that the system will help clean-up environmental problems, and the developed handy oil skimmer system will be equipped on five Japanese governmental ships.
