A ten-kilowatt fiber laser that is part of a system for deep penetration laser welding of pipeline steel allows 50% faster welding than current technology. The fiber is 200 microns in diameter, and the system can weld X70 at a speed of 2.2m/min. It is designed for the oil and gas industries to weld pipeline steel that exceeds a thickness of 10 mm.
