The ability to realize innovative products and to cope with the ever increasing system complexity seems to become one of the key success factors in the strong competition especially within the automotive premium segment. Despite of the increasing system complexity there is a need to meet stringent quality goals. Thus a certain goal conflict between innovation, quality and complexity seems to exist which leads to differing reactions of the competing companies. Some pursue a reduction of the innovation speed and try to focus on quality improvements, others try to reduce complexity by reducing variants and individualization. Individualization is an important feature for the premium segment and their is little room to reduce it especially if customers are used to it. What else is the alternative for a premium OEM to handle these conflicting goals? The answer is that innovation has not only to focus on new functions visible to customers but also on the quality, robustness and capability of the on-board infrastructure. System design and system architecture is becoming an increasing importance to allow for future innovations by providing better performance, a more robust behaviour, intelligent management of systems and resources, reducing integration problems and supporting production and service processes. This contribution discusses some of the key factors for future automotive architectures and gives an outlook on the BMW perspective for future vehicle system design and architectures. Demands in the area of software refer primarily to the modularisation of software and to the construction of software functional libraries to enable the reusability of software modules in future. These demands can only be realized in open system architectures.
