The complexity of automotive electronics has increased continuously over the last years. This is caused by the rising numbers of sensors, actuators, and electronic control units, as well as by their integration with navigation systems and consumer electronics. Future innovations in automotive electronics will depend on the cross linking of several currently separate functions. New concepts for networks and their components will be necessary to serve the emerging demands. An important role will be played by gateways, interconnecting the distributed networks. Current gateway implementations depend on either an inflexible application specific complex-channel CAN controller or on a set of discrete-channel CAN controllers served by a message handling software. The second concept is more flexible regarding the gateway structure, but the load on the controller depends on the combined bus traffic of all connected CAN networks. A new gateway concept has been developed to combine the advantages of both solutions. The new concept allows the direct connection of several discrete-channel CAN controllers (Bosch C_CAN module). The cascaded ring bus structure of the interconnection allows the combination of any number of C_CAN modules. On the cascade ring a message can be provided to all nodes in the gateway within one clock cycle whereby the load of the gateway controller is reduced dramatically. In this paper the first implementations and results of their evaluation are presented.
