Lately, some marine engines have been damaged due to the difficulty of controlling the combustion of some bunker fuels. As it is very difficult to detect such 'trouble-making bunker fuels' according to normal fuel properties data, other means of detecting them should be developed. In the current study, more than ten bunker fuels, including six trouble-making ones, were sampled from various ships. Six possible methods for detecting trouble-making bunker fuels were evaluated. The results were as follows. Positive correlation between nitrogen % in the fuel and the occurrence of engine troubles was found in all of the troublemaking fuels sampled for this study. The trouble-making fuels had higher total aromaticity than normal ones with NMR measurement. Not all of the troublemaking fuels showed longer ignition delay on FIA measurement, whereas they always showed longer after-burning than the normal ones in the visual combustion chamber. Addition of a small amount of trouble-making fuel into cylinder lubricating oil worsened its detergency and lowered coking temperature in hot tube test. Scuffing tests with a special test rig revealed a higher scuffing possibility of such cylinder oil to which a small amount of the trouble-making fuel was added. Some of these methods could help to detect troublemaking fuels, if the measuring methods could be done more easily.
