The YUNUS underwater acoustic data acquisition system has been developed in a cooperative program between the Turkish Naval Acoustic Research Group and the Earth and Marine Sciences Research Institute of TUBITAK Marmara Research Center. The new system has been developed for measuring underwater acoustic fields both in horizontal and vertical plains. The system consists of an array of eight directional hydrophones taken from SSQ-53D directional frequency analysis and recording (DIFAR) sonobuoys, and also a digital radio link to transmit the acoustic signals to a ship or land station from as far away as ten kilometers. Each DIFAR hydrophone provides three acoustic signals generated by three sensors consisting of one omni-directional and two directional hydrophones having a figure eight-shaped horizontal directivity pattern oriented along two orthogonal directions. The DIFAR array has a total length of 70 meters, with eight elements at a spacing of ten meters, and the upper hydrophone is five meters from the sub-surface buoy. The system is designed to operate in shallow waters to a maximum depth of 100 meters, and to decouple the receiving arrays from local environmental effects, a U-shaped deployment layout is utilized for acoustic measurements.
