Self-cleaning conductivity and temperature (CT) sensors, called Compact CT wipers (CTW), were deployed and tested for prevention of bio-fouling in underwater sensors, in Nomi Bay off Japan's southern island of Shikoku between February 6 and March 7, 2004. The effect of bio-fouling on temperature sensors is usually benign, as it does not change the sensor's calibration per se, and any biological growth only affects the time constant of the thermometer. The CTW sensor has a piston-like wiper mechanism that periodically sweeps the measurement cavity in the conductivity sensor. The conductivity cell of the CTW is a seven-electrode cell with a plunger that periodically sweeps the measurement cavity. A piston wiper with a circular silicone blade gently brushes aside the inside of the cell at regular intervals to keep the electrodes and the inside cavity free of growth. During the field test, the total deployment time was 728 hours, and the Compact CTW was moored on a raft next to one original Compact CT sensor at a depth of one meter. Each instrument recorded data sample of conductivity and temperature every 10 minutes. The tests prove that wiper mechanisms are an effective way of preventing bio-fouling in sensors during deployment.
