The eBrake is a novel self-reinforcing electro-mechanical wedge brake. Self reinforcement reduces the actuation forces, resulting in a more efficient and smaller brake, but demands more precise control than a conventional braking system. As a result, mathematical modelling and control law development plays a significant role in the development process. At eStop, the mathematical model and control laws are developed and tested in Matlab/Simulink. The control laws are then auto-coded and downloaded to hardware, initially using a dSpace rapid prototyping environment and more recently via xPC Target. This paper describes the testing environment, the mathematical model of the brake and its validation against the prototype hardware. It is shown that there is a good correspondence between theory and practice, demonstrating both the validity of the model and its potential as a tool in future developments. Both the model and test results illustrate that the benefits of this design are realisable in practice. This paper describes the development environment used for the design and testing of the mechatronic wedge brake. The use of rapid prototyping tools based on Matlab/Simulink has resulted in fast development and testing of the control algorithms within a unified software environment. This has been a major advantage and has enabled great progress to be made with a small team.
