The paper deals with the research activities carried out at Politecnico di Milano in order to develop an electro-mechanical actuator for railway vehicles to be mounted between the bogie and the carbody, in the same position where standard yaw dampers are usually placed. The active system is operated in force control. In tangent track the reference force value is defined to be proportional to the relative carbody-bogie speed while during curve negotiation the reference force value is defined in order to produce a steering torque on the bogie that allows to balance the ripage forces acting on the two axles. An actively controlled yaw damper has been shown that allows to increase the vehicle speed on both straight tracks (increased stability) and curved tracks (reduced wear and fatigue of both rails and wheels through a steering torque that balances the ripage forces on the two axles). The controlled damper was mounted on a railway vehicle and preliminary tests were carried out to determine the optimal parameters for increased stability in straight track running and to determine the dynamic behaviour of the steering control logic and the influence of the lookup tables along curved tracks.
