The energy supply of cars is performed by the combustion engine in combination with a generator and a starter battery. But there is already a major problem to ensure its stability. Car manufacturer world wide are following the concept of a stronger 42 V board net. In this system an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) enables electricity generation at efficiencies beyond 80 % and electric recuperation by restoring of otherwise lost braking energy. The Full functionality of the ISG requires an energy supply and storage system, which complies with the high demands of the automotive industry (cost efficiency, life time and reliability). A consortium of 7 leading actors in the car industry from four EU member countries is developing such an energy supply concept which is based on an advanced lead acid battery for the 42 V board net, a powerful double layer capacitor and an innovative connection of the system components with a smart electronic switch.
