The S-92 AFC consists of FBW technology, advanced flight control laws and open system architecture software. These three aspects of the S-92 AFC all bring benefits to the entire life cycle of the aircraft. FBW is a mature technology that significantly enhances helicopter performance compared to conventional flight control systems. The FBW/FCS brings a weight reduction that the operator can capitalize on by increasing payload, range and/or performance. The reduced part inventory, including flight safety parts, increase in reliability and extensive built-in-test functions all work to reduce the cost of procuring, operating and maintaining the aircraft, FBW technology provides the infrastructure lo enable implementation of advanced control laws. These control laws, coupled with the FBW system's capacity for full authority commands, provide high-integrity ADS-33 Level 1 handling qualities during degraded and poor visual conditions. This drastically reduces cockpit workload and allows the pilot to concentrate on successfully executing the mission. Conversely, the advanced control laws also allow pilots to perform more aggressive maneuvers and push the aircraft to the edge of its envelope. The advanced control laws also provide a foundation for the path forward as listed below: Improve situational awareness through sensor technology; Provide the sensor outputs to the pilot (uncoupled sensors); Use the sensors for partial control and/or generate cueing (visual, tactile, aural) to aid the pilot in flying the aircraft. Partitioned application software, a layered architecture, and the ARINC 653 open standard API provide a safe, flexible means of reducing development effort for flight critical software. With software partitioning to separate the applications, modifications to enhance capability or performance can be added to any software partition without interfering with the embedded code or other partitions.
