Lubricants are essential design elements in the complex systems of marine diesel engines. The Working Group (WG) 'Lubricants' was established in 1987 with the aim to generate a user language on the lubrication of large diesel engines and on the technology of designing and using lubricants and lubrication systems. This paper provides a picture on how this WG was established an how it was able to develop its structure, its working style, its methods and its unique efficiency. It was found vital to differentiate between what the WG should do and what it should leave to others. The WG has attracted a most effective mix of members contributing to its tasks: On a global basis OEMs equipment manufacturers, oil and additive suppliers, classification societies and scientific institutions came together and shared the work, but also insights and information achieved. Of particular efficiency was the distribution of jobs to subgroups, be it on individual topics like the 'liner lacquering' problem or the cure for 'raw residual fuel contamination', or on the drafting of bulletins, or even shares thereof. Current work is on the treatment of lubricants, an update of Recommendation No. 13, the impacts of emission controls and the lubrication of engines running on non-standard fuels. A future key problem will be the lubrication of marine diesel engines running for prolonged periods on Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (LSFO). This and the inflammability of lubricant / fuel vapours in the crankcase will need a dedicated input from all members.
