The common rail fuel injection system for marine diesel engines can meet the demands for simultaneous reduction of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. The key techniques of common rail fuel injection system must be studied in detail. Virtual prototyping is becoming a common practice due to time and cost constraints in diesel engine field industry. This paper studies the main key techniques of common rail fuel injection system for marine diesel engines by use of simulation and test research. Based on the theory of 1D compressible fluid flow dynamics and 2D multipart body dynamics, a simulation model was established by HYDSIM software. The model, with consideration of the effect of leakage from plunger couples and needle couples and the body's elastic deformation etc., can calculate the pressure in the hydraulic volumes and the lines, the lift of needle and control piston, the injection volumes, injection rate, the spray characteristics and so on. The effects of the main structure parameters (such as plunger effective lift, the number of common rail and its volume, the diameter of nozzle, etc.) and the key techniques (such as control system, mismachining tolerance of key parts etc.) on the performance of common rail fuel injection system are discussed. According to the simulation results, conclusions were obtained, which would be helpful to develop and design a new common rail fuel injection system for marine diesel engine. The conclusions were justified by an experiment on a common rail fuel injection system on a model 234 diesel engine. The result of simulation model matches the test result well. It is helpful to research and design common rail fuel injection system using the model.
