The Indian Navy is a force to reckon with in the Indian Ocean and sub continent. As on date, the diesel propelled ships include frigates, patrol vessels, submarines, missile corvettes, survey ships, fleet tankers, cadet training ship, landing ship tanks, ocean going tug, minesweepers, torpedo boats and fast attack crafts. One of the earliest diesels in service were the ASR I diesel engines fitted on type 41 frigates and Deltic engines on coastal minesweepers. In addition to Russian diesels, German, French, and British diesel engines followed suit in 1980s as main engines and prime movers onboard survey ships, seaward defence boats, submarines, offshore patrol vessels (OPV), missile corvettes, and landing ship tanks. The aim of this paper is to share the wide experience of the Indian Navy in operating a variety of diesel engines onboard warships. It is proposed to highlight the operating experience in two broad categories: Engines for propulsion; Engines for power generation.
