After controlling the railway car axles, many defects are usually observed by ultrasonic tests. The defected axles were studied on metallographic specimens obtained by destructive methods. Slag inclusions, shrinkage porosity and liquations were the most common defects found in the forged axles. The cross-rolled axles showed additionally inner cracks and snowflakes. The defects were easily formed when hydrogen content in the steel was relatively high. The metallographic specimens were heat-treated and then quenched to confirm the presence of flakes.
