Energy supply systems with batteries or combustion engines and Ultra Capacitors need an intelligent management system to control power and state of charge. This contribution explains the development and the function of an energy management system for a combined electric storage system consisting of Ultra Capacitors, a NiMH battery and Zinc Air battery. The system is designed for high accelerations and high travel distances and improves the overall system properties. The management system controls the state of charge for each battery, limits the power of motor and batteries, handles system and component errors and distributes the required motor power among the batteries. The recovery of energy during braking depends on the allowed charge power of batteries and the efficiency of the whole drive train. Since the required power for acceleration increases with the vehicle speed, the optimal strategy starts with a small power contribution from the Ultra Capacitor only and increases its contribution, if the base battery does not have enough power available. This strategy reduces the load of the second booster battery and ensures a save vehicle operation.
