The power type of 15 Ah lithium-ion battery, particularly suitable for light electric vehicle (LHEV) application, has been developed in ITRI by using LiMn2O4 as cathode material and MCMB as anode material. Specific power, cycle life and safety performance of the cell are significantly enhanced due to the electrodes and cell components design. The internal resistance of the cell is lower than 1.7 mOhms. The performance tests show the specific power of the cell is over 1250 W/kg at 80% SOC. For the rate capability characteristic, the cell can be retained 90% of initial capacity when discharge at 10C (150A) rate at room temperature and 92% of initial capacity when discharge at 3C (45A) rate at -20?. The cycle life performance of the cell is over 2500 cycles at the test condition of 1C (15A) charge and discharge rate between 60%-80%SOC. Thus, the cell performance fully meets the power requirements of LHEV application. Safety properties are investigated, including nail penetration, crush and overcharge tests. The results show no explosion or fire under all safety test conditions. Eight cells were assembled in series to form a battery module with battery management system, and three modules pack into a battery pack for LHEV test. The LHEV power system is 88.8 V.The test results show the battery pack has excellent power performance.
