Performance of external anticorrosion extruded polymer coatings for underground steel pipelines relies upon three essential properties: high electrical resistance, low permeability toward water vapor, oxygen and other corrosives, and good adhesion to steel substrate. Long-term preservation of such properties in service is essential to guarantee the coatings efficiency over the entire lifetime. More specifically, in presence of defects, inherent to the construction, laying and burying of pipelines, it is essential to maintain a sufficiently strong bond between steel and coating along the desired lifetime. Several standard tests are currently proposed for the selection and qualification of these coatings, including cathodic disbondment, hot water immersion and peel strength tests. However there is still a lack of a consensus on the best test procedures for evaluating long-term service performance of coating to steel adhesion strength. This paper presents laboratory results of a study of the coating, to steel adhesion aging, carried out on pipe coupons coated with a 3 layer extruded polyethylene coating. Several parameters, such as: cathodic potential, temperature and temperature cycles, soil solution chemistry, dry/humid cycles, were considered: their impact on peel strength behavior for different aging times was investigated. The work intends to shed light on the possible in service degradation mechanisms of the coating to steel bond. From tests results, the possibility to build sound accelerated test procedures is discussed.
