A series of high performance machining centers utilising PKM technology are presented which combine the advantages of both serial and parallel kinematics and avoid their conceptual drawbacks. The machining centers are intended to manufacture different classes of aerospace parts ranging from small to large monolithic structure parts as well as special solutions for wing-skin stringers. Productivity gains between 30 and 300 percent, depending on the process, have been reported by customers. To overcome the weaknesses of conventional head designs and to implement high performance 5-axis simultaneous machining, DS Technologie developed the Sprint Z3 head. The head is capable of a z-stroke of 670 mm and a maximum tilting angle of +/- 40 degrees. Due to the parallel kinematics concept, a swivel rate of 80 degrees/s is achieved in all angular positions. The motor spindles are cartridge type and can be changed by means of fast couplings within two hours. Dependent on the process characteristics, different spindle characteristics can be implemented, e.g. HSK-A63/80, 30000 rpm with a maximum power of 80 kW. It is evident that the head consists only of approved standard components in its mechanical set up, which leads to maximum reliability under production conditions.
