Al-Mg-Si alloy extrusions and rolled Al-Mg alloy sheets used for car body frames and panel components are welded with high-power Nd: YAG lasers and the joint performance compared with those of MIG welding and resistance spot welding for the same parts. Joint strength and welding distortion were also evaluated. The results obtained may be summarised as follows: (1) During lap welding of thin Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloy sheets with a twin-spot Nd: YAG laser, lap joints with a stable high strength are obtained over a wide welding speed range at a beam distance of 0.6 mm. (2) Laser welding can be performed at an approximately 10-fold faster speed than MIG welding. The amount of welding distortion then found can be substantially reduced. (3) Laser stitch welding provides the smallest distortion. (4) The laser weld bead length with strength equivalent to one resistance spot weld is around 14 mm.
