In this paper the John Deere AutoPowr transmission, an infinitely variable transmission for agricultural tractors of the 7720 to 7920 Series tractors is presented. A design with the following characteristics was selected: - large, efficient bent axis hydrostatic elements combined into an integrated module; - a relatively simple planetary combining the summing function with two forward ranges and a reverse; - electronic controls integrated into all elements of design. A simple but powerful driver interface is a key feature of this product. The AutoClutch allows the tractor to be driven using only the throttle and brakes. The transmission ratio, engine speed and clutch engagement are automatically adjusted to provide any speed easily with maximum performance and minimum fuel consumption. The use of sophisticated electronic controls allows the tractor to provide maximum performance, regardless of the speed or load required. The transmission can be separated into several distinct mechanical areas: - fixed and variable hydrostatic units; - compound planetary assembly; - Hi-Lo clutches & reverse. Transmission layout and controller and communication layout are described. The electronic controls support diagnostic tests and service work to minimize the amount of time that the tractor might be out of service due to mechanical problems.
