After ABS and Airbag, a new safety feature will enter the majority of vehicles within the next five years - Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS): MEMS devices, placed in the tires, measure pressure and temperature and send these information to a central dashboard unit in the vehicle by themselves, or by using other MEMS or microsystems. The following paper describes the technical principal of so called direct Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, using monitors embedded in the tire or embedded in a tire valve with included MEMS devices, micro-controller based signal conditioning chips and UHF transmitters to relay the relevant information to the vehicle. Also application specific challenges like automatic tire rotation detection are highlighted as well as the comparison with indirect (ABS sensor based) systems.
