The aim of this paper is to present the effect of the cooling liquid degradation on the durability of car radiators. The radiator manufacturer's goal is to provide a radiator design and tube material selection coupled with minimum coolant maintenance to meet the mileage durability target. However, the evaluation of internal corrosion resistance uses very diversified criteria depending on the radiator manufacturer and, consequently, the validation of radiator design and materials is still uncertain. This incertitude is due to the unrealistic approach of the accelerated testing conditions, and unsuccessful correlation with radiators from field evaluation. Other problems are: 1. The limited quantity of information on field testing of car radiators. 2. The proliferation and variety of cooling liquid brands, including organic (long life), inorganic and hybrid coolants. 3. The identification of real parameters playing a significant role on the internal corrosion, such as the cooling liquid degradation. 4. The non-established mission profile of the radiators.
