A general real-time simulation model for a fuel cell hybrid motorcycle was developed. The power source adopts proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) using hydrogen stored in two metal-hydride canisters as the fuel. The model was coded on a MATLAB/ SIMULINK platform. Detailed mathematical equations as well as the control strategy are described in the paper. The ECE and FTP driving pattern simulation results show that the fuel cell motorcycle may well replace the traditional internal combustion engines from the viewpoint of air pollution and fuel economy. PEMFCs are also superior to the traditional batteries because of extended mileage and easy refueling. The major technical criterion may settle at the endurance and robustness problems. Also the cost is still the major barrier at this stage.
