The reason why minerals transported as slurry all comes down to a combination of economics and customer requirements. It also needs an in depht understanding of the mineral being transported, logistical practicalities and ecological awareness. For example, in Brazil, Imerys constructed a dollar 20m. pipeline at its Capim kaoline mine to solve a logistic problem from mine to plant. Europe's leading ground calcium carbonate (GCC) producer, Omya AG, in transporting GCC for the paper industry is a perfect example of slurry mineral transportation from mine to customer. Omya's biggest plant at Elesvagen, Norway, uses only ships for the transportation of its GCC slurries. In Europe, Omya access to around 1,000 stainless steel tank rail wagons and some of the company's plants preferentially use rail to transport products. For the last few kilometers to the costumer, Omya use trucks, as over short distances, trucks are the only solution both economically and ecologically.
