The sales of light trucks and sport utility vehicles has been on increase for the last several years. This has led to a dramatic change in mix of on road vehicles. Light trucks or SUVs are inherently less fuel efficient, and provide a particular challenge in meeting governmental regulations in this respect. These vehicles are increasingly used under highly loaded operating conditions. Increase in severity of vehicles component operation has put additional demand on durability of these components. Maintaining the durability of the load bearing members of a vehicle such as axles is in direct competition with increasing fuel economy of these vehicles. This is particularly true when selecting an axle lubricant to provide durability of mechanical components, as well as improving the fuel economy. A project was intiated to look at the development of lubricants designed to close the gap between the two divergent needs. The approach to the development includes a study of some of the fundamental lubricant properties such as high pressure and shear stress rheological behavior under controlled laboratory conditions. The findings from the basic studies are then extended to full-scale axle evaluations, which measure both peak temperature and efficiency under severe operating conditions.
