The pressures on the automotive industry in terms of cost and weight have been, and remain extreme, with continually intensifying technological deployment in response to market needs. The progressive implementation of European End of the Life Vehicles Directive (ELVD), places the responsibility for end-of-life vehicle disposal with the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM's). Vehicle design of the future will need to increasingly focus not just on assembly, but also final disassembly and consequently, require the number of differing materials in any given assembly to be minimised. The implications of the impending ELV legislation is that the current work undertaken to ensure products are recyclable, now becomes a legal requirement, with design criterion including: - Engineering environmentally friendly aspects and recycling into products right from the concept phase. - Reducing complexity by using fewer material types. - Avoiding mixed materials and marking components with recycling codes where possible. - Use of materials that can be easily recycled and use of materials containing recyclate where available. - Design for easy separation. These requirements inevitably increase cost pressure. The challenge is to find innovative solutions to ensure that systems functionality and quality are achieved without adversely impacting total product cost.
