(continued from number 3, page 289-308) The methodology proposed in the first paper of this series to predict disc brake squeal has been complemented with the addition of the linearisation and modal analysis phases of the procedure. The process of linearisation is relatively straightforward, involving the replacement of the original non-linear contact elements with equivalent linear interface elements. The latter have proven reliable in their prediction of the magnitude of normal and in-plane frictional force to within acceptable numerical bounds. The eigenvalue extraction routine generates a database of all the modes of vibration within a user defined frequency range thereby permitting the subsequent detailed analysis of individual modes of motion. The squeal propensity of the datum system has been explored as a function of change in interface friction level and the results show the system to be more prone to squeal as the level of interface friction increases. Furthermore, there is a clear relationship between the squeal indicator and the uniformity of contact across the rubbing surfaces. The behaviour of both stable and unstable modes has been shown to be in agreement with other reported findings. Limitations associated with the display of the individual mode shapes have been highlighted and a procedure presented that allows the analyst to capture the key phase information embodied within a complex mode, and view the detailed motion at the interface on a single plot. This has led to the proposal of a possible squeal mechanism. (to be continued)
