To attain weight and functional advantages in automotive production through the use of alternative materials in the future, only one element truly remains: titanium. Since the beginning of industrial production of titanium and titanium alloys in the 1950ies, this material has been very attractive to car manufactures because of its high specific strength, its highly elastic energy absorption capacity, and its excellent corrosion resistance. Starting with applications in motor racing, these advantageous properties of titanium alloys have been used in the automotive industry and in the past years titanium has been able to make the leap to serial production. Some of the most promising titanium alloys for application in automotive production are Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al4Sn4Zr1Nb1Mo0.2Si, Ti-4.5Fe6.8Mo1.5Al and Ti-46.8Al1Cr0.2Si. Ti alloys are clearly superior to other metallic materials when a structure component is designed for maximum strength or fatigue strength. Potential applications are primarily identified in the chassis and powertrain. In the body, crash elements made from Ti-6Al-4V are conceivable. Also, the use of titanium can at least be partially considered for the amoring of security vehicles. Further, decorative elements both in the interior and for emblems can be made of titanium. Finally, an additional and attractive potential application is the exhaust system. Here, titanium can be the alternative for stainless steel 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10) that is currently used for high-quality exhaust systems. In order to extend the use of titanium even in small series production, significant cost-cutting is necessary for semi-finished titanium products. One major point is the expensive titanium production from ore to sponge followed by remelting and forming, where new and less costly processes are urgently needed.
