Micro mirror projection systems are on the market. The projected light is digitally controlled, switched via micro mirrors (DMD - digital micro mirror device). Specially designed chips contain up to 500000 micro mirrors, by intermitted switching of these mirrors the intensity of the projected light can be varied. Adapting these devices for automotive applications a programmable headlamp (Pixel Light) could be available in future. In addition with other car data (Connected Drive) these intelligent headlamps are able to fulfil new functions especially in combination with sensitive camera systems: headlamp levelling, left hand, right hand drive beam adaptation, swivelling beams, selective illumination of objects, intensify contrast of road markings, projection of information e.g. to the road surface. The image processing is based on high speed and secure detection of objects. First Pixel Light applications will therefore be designed as an add-on-element to the conventional lighting systems. In the moment, legal restrictions prevent the use of Pixel Light, but new laws are in preparation which will merely prescribe light distribution parameters.
