Paint finish is probably not at the top of the list of priorities for buyers of Transits, but Ford is very proud of the build quality of its top-selling van, and finish is just as important as design, engineering and assembly. So when the Ford, Southampton paint shop's ageing Permutit deionised water treatment plant showed signs of reaching the end of its useful life. The quality of the paint finish is only so good as the surface preparation, and the Ford line is a conventional one with alkaline degreasing, phosphating and electro-coating with water rinses between the stages. To meet Ford's exacting paint finish standards, the spray rinses are deionised water. The water used for making up the electro-coat bath is also deionised. Water quality is usually measured by conductivity. As a new technology, continuous deionisation (CDI) is an electrically driven deionisation technology based on ion exchange membranes, which produces high purity water without using any hazardous chemicals. CDI is a polishing process, which is employed usually after primary deionisation by reverse osmosis. CDI has become the industry standard technology for producing high purity water in the pharmaceutical industry and israpidly gaining acceptance in many other fields of application.
