In 2002 about 300.000 cars will be recycled by ARN in the Netherlands. The recycling percentage of the materials brought back into the different materials cycles is at the moment 86%. The remainder of the material of the recycling process, currently 14%, is landfilled. The New EC legislation to be implemented in the Netherlands in 2003 means that 85% has to be recycled, of which a maximum of 5% by thermal processing. In 2007 the Dutch law requires the EC recycling targets of 2015 to be implemented in the Netherlands. The means a recycling percentage of 95% has to be attained of which a maximum of 10% by thermal processing and a maximum of 5% by landfilling. In the ARN system either the material recycling percentage has to be increased to 95% or alternatively a new approach to thermal processing in the Netherlands has to be implemented. The different options will be discussed and research work carried out at the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands will be presented. The following conclusion can be drawn: The closure of material cycles can be optimised by feed forward control of the various processes within the interconnected resource cycle system; major improvements in the recycling can be expected from design for recycling; the combination of cheap bulk sorting technology with sensor technology will increase grade and recovery of materials in the resource cycle and dual energy X-ray transmission imaging has a high potential for implementing advanced applications in process control, quality control and particle separation for automobile recycling.
