Due to its high specific power and energy characteristic, lithium-ion battery become promising for electric bikes, especially for touring pedelec which requires long distance driving as well as sports pedelec which requires high power output. ITRI developed 10 Ah lithium-ion cells with a power rate of 500 W/kg. A module for 24 V electric bike was designed by packing seven such 10 Ah cells in series. The battery management system (BMS) was also developed with functions of monitoring voltage and temperature of each cell and amperage during both charge and discharge to protect overvoltage, under-voltage, over-current and over- temperature etc. The state-of-charge (SOC) is also estimated and reported by the battery management system. Giant pedelec 'Lafree' with the developed 240 Wh lithium-ion modules achieved over 40 km range from the results of road riding test. The weight of the tested battery pack is 4.5 kg, which is 50% of its originally installed lead-acid batteries. This is surely appreciated by those drivers who need to take battery pack out from the electric bikes for charging in their offices of houses. This article briefly introduces the design and development of battery module including battery management system.
