Mild hybrid electric vehicles (Mild-HEV) utilizing 42 V system voltage are drawing ever-increasing public interest as one form of commercially viable hybrid electric vehicle ( HEV). The Mild-HEV offers opportunities for enhanced fuel-economy, reduced exhaust emissions, and reduced total system cost. An integrated 36 V monoblock lead-acid battery has been develped as a power source for 42 V vehicle applications through further advancements of the existing high reliability, high performance-to-cost-ratio, reliable, and safe lead-acid battery technology. To further improve performance, reduced thickness electrode plates, the active materials of which feature enhanced charge acceptance capability, and a low resistance structure have been developed; among other enhanced properties. Through these advancements a high discharge power capability of 9.6 kW and a high regenerative power capability of 4.2 kW (25 Cel) have been achieved. As temperature rise due to the continuous repetition of charge/discharge at high currents in actual applications is a matter of great concern for HEV battery life, an improved heat dissipating battery structure has been adopted, resulting in significantly improved HEV cycle life characteristics.
