A novel Ni/MH battery and a battery control unit for hybrid electric vehicles have been developed. The main point is downsizing and cost reduction. The newly developed battery module consisted of 5/4 C size cylindrical cells. The cell was 62 % in volume as compared to well-known D size cell but powerful. The 125 A discharge capacity was about 85 % of nominal capacity, and the specific power of discharge and regeneration at 50 % SOC were 900 W/kg and 670 W/kg respectively. The battery control unit consisted of sensing unit, computing unit and interface. The voltage sensing circuit was consisted of inexpensive circuit parts but the accuracy was 0.3 % FS at whole operating temperature. A novel SOC estimation algorithm was also developed. The SOC value was obtained by the weighing combination of the values from the SOC-OCV table and the current integration. In order to estimate the OCV accurately from the detected CCV, the polarization after charge or discharge with very long relaxation time was calculated using an original equivalent circuit model.
