The electric bus developed by Kyushu Electric Power Company for touring Genkai Nuclear Power Station aims to address global environmental issues. The bus, having a seat capacity of 28, is 10.1 meters long, 2.4 meters wide and 3.0 meters high. Its kerb weight is 12 tons, including a 3-ton battery system. With its barrier-free features, the bus has a low deck body and a slope to ensure easy access for passengers in wheelchairs. Traveling performance allows for a top speed of 80km/h, a climbing ability of 0.21, and a range per charging of 160km at a constant speed of 40km/h. The bus enables driving on roads with a maximum grade of 0.057 (3.3 degrees) at a speed of around 50km/h. In terms of technical features, the bus has an induction motor mounted as its drive motor with a maximum output of 120kW. The motor is powered by 56 units of 135Ah-12V valve regulated lead-acid batteries (28 units in a series, in two parallel rows). An external power source for heating and cooling is employed while stationary to save on battery power consumption for the air conditioning system. A five-phase constant-current charging method is applied into the stationary charger for the electric bus to extend its battery life. The charger has two charging circuits so as to charge the battery units in two-parallel rows evenly by means of disconnecting its parallel connection during the charging operation. Additionally, the bus is equipped with two portable chargers to extend its traveling range by stopping to re-charge en route. Test driving operations were executed until the commencement, which included collecting data relating to the planned courses.
