Powder metal 400 series stainless steels, in particular, 409LE and 409LNi, were tested to confirm static mechanical properties and develop data on fatigue and impact strengths of these two materials, processed under commercial manufacturing conditions. It was found that these PM materials must possess a minimum sintered density of 7.2 g/cm3, and be produced via high-temperature hydrogen sintering in order to meet the static mechanic properties and thermal fatigue requirements, as well as corrosion/oxidation resistance and elevated temperature strength retention (leak tightness).
Hot sintering can bring out the best in stainless steels
