A formula is advanced to calculate temperature of the contact spot between the rail and the wheel. It has been revealed that this temperature determines the friction coefficient in the first approximation. It is shown that the surfaces can ''memorize'' the preceding loading through the actual contact area. An approach is proposed to determination of the temperature limits at which the actual contact area begins to grow quickly.
