Underground natural gas storage in salt formations is being constructed in Carrigo, Pombal (Portugal), by Transgas. This project, its construction and exploration will provide the opportunity of using a three-dimensional numerical model in development to study certain aspects related with the mechanical behavior of these structures. The volume change, the induced field stress, the cavity base rise due to gravity effects are some of the mechanical aspects that should be possible to predict for future cavities excavations. After a brief description of the project, regarding the shape and volume of the cavities, the expected stored gas volumes and exploration maximum and minimum pressures, some considerations are made about how these parameters affect the cavity behavior and its exploration. In a first phase the operation pressures influence over the induced field stress around two cavities is discussed. The spherical and cylindrical shapes were considered in the calculations. An elastoviscoplastic type of behavior is applied in the model with mechanical parameters obtained from previous experimental studies. A long term (10 years) numerical analysis with a one-year cyclic variation of storage pressure is presented. The cavity volume change, the stress and displacement distribution around cavity walls are the main data to determine the type of mechanical response to the imposed pressure variation.
